Fort William broke through for his maiden win on Monday at Mornington in the 3-Year-Old Maiden over 1200 metres, saluting at nice odds ($17) with Teo Nugent in the saddle.

Sitting three-wide with cover in transit, Nugent made a four-wide move on the Smart Missile gelding before the home turn, hitting the front in the final 100 metres and scoring by a short-half head on the line.

It was pleasing to see Fort William get the job done at his fifth-start in nice fashion for his connections, Julie Sampson and Meridy Taite, following his eye-catching first-up second-placing a fortnight prior at Ballarat where he raced greenly. The win was made more special for Nugent who, with his partner Claira, spelled Fort William at their property, Nuside Park, prior to this campaign.

With plenty of improvement to come as he continues to learn from race experience, we look forward to Fort William continuing through his grades.

Congratulations to Julie and Meridy, and all of the hardworking team at Moloney Racing!
