Legionnaire put pay to his rivals during his interstate raid on Saturday at Morphettville, taking out the BM72 Furphy Handicap with Jess Eaton in the saddle.

With over two years since his previous maiden win at Flemington back in September of 2019, the 5yo Stratum gelding was given a textbook ride from Eaton who allowed the usual front-rolling galloper to cruise along just off the speed, over the 1200 metre distance.

Tracking into the race before the turn, Eaton brought Legionnaire to the outside on straightening and he was able to challenge the leading pair 300 metres out, finishing off nicely to win by three quarters of a length.

It was a terrific performance from both horse and trainer, with Legionnaire saluting at his seventh run of the campaign after dropping back in distance from 1400 metres at his previous start, with two runs over 1600 metres prior to that.

With this confidence-boosting run under his belt, we hope that Legionnaire can continue his winning form for his owners and breeders, Julie Sampson and Meridy Taite.

Congratulations to Julie and Meridy, and all of the team at Moloney Racing!
