Moloney chases rare treble

IT’S a case of quality, not quantity, for John Moloney this weekend.
The Caulfield trainer has three runners engaged and all appear to have a winning chance.
“We have a nice team and hopefully we have some joy,” Moloney told G1X.com.au. “I’m looking forward to it.”
Moloney will be looking to land an early blow when two-year-old Liberty Song debuts in a No Metro Wins race over 1000m at Moonee valley on Friday night.
The colt, a $90,000 purchase at last year’s Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling sale, is by Statue Of Liberty from Bel Esprit mare Music In The Park – a winner at Caulfield at two.
Liberty Song has had one trial, winning over 800m at Cranbourne on February 8. She has drawn gate 11 and is an $11 chance with bookmaker William Hill.
“She’s nice, strong filly, showing promise,” Moloney said. “She has trialled well and I expect her to run well. I reckon she’ll be a sprinter.”
On Saturday at Flemington, Call Me Tess, an impressive debut winner of a 900m Bendigo maiden earlier this month, lines up in the Listed Talindert Stakes (1100m).
“She did it all her own way at Bendigo,” he added. “There’s a bit of a wrap on (runner-up) Havildar and I thought he had his chance to run her down. She’s pleased me since and I’m hoping she can step up to the plate.”
Call Me Tess’ dam Songs Of Vienna (by Umatilla) was raced by Moloney and is the grand-dam of Liberty Song. The bay filly is by super speed sire Bel Esprit.
A $16 chance, Call Me Tess has drawn barrier 10.
And on Sunday, Moloney heads to Launceston for the Listed Tasmanian Oaks (2100m), where lightly-raced Domesday filly Maldicion (gate 11) will look to pick up Black-type.
“Her maiden win at Cranbourne two starts back was solid,” Moloney said. “She beat All That I Know on that occasion and she came out and ran third in the (Listed) Strutt Stakes (over 2100m at Hobart on February 8) and could’ve finished closer.”
Maldicion has won one of her four starts and was fifth behind Lahqa, beaten 3.5 lengths, over 1600m at Moonee Valley at her most recent outing.
Victorian apprentice Patrick Moloney, John’s nephew, will ride Liberty Song, Call Me Tess and Maldicion.
