Scorched Earth continued her red hot form this campaign on Saturday at Caulfield, beginning 2022 with a bang for the Moloney Racing team.

The Nicconi speedster was tasked with facing the older sprinters in the McKerley Handicap over 1100m, and despite enduring a wide run without cover throughout- and a protest from the second place-getter after shifting in late- the talented three-year-old filly was impressively able to defy all challenges and win by a 0.1 length margin.

“She’s a good filly – she never had any favours today,” Gerard Moloney said post-race, “She never had any cover, jockey is half a kilo over – she’s pretty good I reckon.”

The future certainly looks bright for Scorched Earth, who was a $90,000 purchase from the 2019 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale.

Now with four wins from nine starts, and over $400,000 in prize money, Scorched Earth will now enjoy a freshen-up before eyeing some richer sprinting races in the Autumn, such as the Oakleigh Plate.

John Moloney is now on the Gold Coast in search of the next stable star at the Magic Millions Yearling Sale to be run from 11th-17th of January. If you are keen to get involved with the team, please give John a call on 0407 538 251.

Congratulations to all connections of Scorched Earth, and all of the hard working team at Moloney Racing!
